Project Based Learning

Intro:
Project based learning is a form of authentic learning and involves getting students to problem solve or think in a way that would apply in the real world. It usually allows students to work together to accomplish a common goal and can include things such as, designing, investigating or discovering solutions to different issues. It takes the behaviorist method of teaching away so that the students can become more involved in their work. In the workplace there are not very often tests every week to ensure you know what you are doing, but there are projects and problems that have to be solved. PBL helps prepare children for what is really out there. It makes class less monotonous and more fun than just listening to a lecture or looking at slides. It gets kids out of their desks and encourages independence in the classroom. With group work there are always different roles for everyone and a chance for every voice to be heard.

                                    PROS                                                                           CONS
-promotes communication
-not appropriate for all subjects
-open ended
-difficult to asses
-deals with real life situations
-rely on creativity more than content

The instructional approach that project based learning is linked to would be constructivist style and authentic learning.
